Sketchy Work History

Many issues can constitute a less-than-desirable work history. Things like having an inconsistent career path or constantly hopping from one job to another often show that they have trouble committing.

Another key issue to look for is if they left due to a disagreement and talk bad about the person they had the problem with. That can show that they were the reason for the problem, or, at the very least, they still have some maturing to do.

Noticeable Time Management Issues

One thing to be careful of with potential job candidates that is usually apparent is if they have issues with time management. Being late to an interview or missing it entirely without a good reason most likely means that they lost track of time or forgot about it. That shows how they would approach the position if you employed them.

Talks Too Much or Too Little

While the level of too much or not enough talking is more subjective, there are some quantifiable results to watch out for on either side. Those who talk too much will likely do things such as ramble off about meaningless subjects or brag about themselves and their accomplishments. While it’s good to talk yourself up in an interview, there is such a thing as too much.

On the other side, giving one- or two-word answers without further explanation is a sign that they only do the bare minimum. You can also see this when you open the floor for questions, and they don’t have anything to ask you.

Expecting Too Much From the Job

If a person has too many demands up-front or is overqualified for the job, hiring them could lead you down a dangerous road. People who expect too much from a small company like yours could end up hurting you by asking for too much money or getting bored and leaving unexpectedly. Regardless of what you think they could bring to the role, it probably isn’t worth the risk.

Doesn’t Seem Trustworthy

While all of the previous points could have reasonable explanations behind them, there’s no excuse for someone being untrustworthy. There are so many things they could have lied about on their resume to get into the interview, so when asking them about parts of it, look for solid eye contact and consistency between answers. The last thing you need in your new company is someone you can’t trust.
